Spent today at Mythos Manchester with @houseofdogstar @abc.buildings

Met some genuinely lovely people, listened to fascinating panel discussions, made new connections, and enjoyed some very tasty food.

I’ve come away feeling really positive about ‘My Name in [Brackets]’, my documentary film about @boohewerdine , thanks to some encouraging conversations and a few promising follow-ups to pursue next week.

It was a brilliant event.

I think this might become an annual fixture in the diary

Today we were out in Skipton filming vox pops for My Name in [Brackets], my documentary about @boohewerdine

Skipton is my hometown, so it felt like the perfect place to gather opinions and stories. Huge thanks to Claire, our Production Coordinator, for keeping all the paperwork and permissions under control, and to Brendan Nicholson, our brilliant Sound Mixer, who I was delighted to bump into during the shoot.

Thanks also to @soundbarskipton for allowing us to film with them today!

And also @cakeoleinsta for the delicious cakes.

I’ll be sharing more behind-the-scenes updates as the film progresses.

Finally ticked something off my bucket list today and visited Stonehenge.

As part of the visit, I learned more about its connection to the summer solstice and how the stones were positioned in relation to the rising and setting sun. It’s fascinating to think about how closely people once lived with the land, the seasons and the natural world.

It also links closely to themes I’m exploring in Witching Realms with @tarnandmoon, our #documentary. One of the things that interests me is how practical knowledge, folklore and traditions were passed through generations, often from mothers to daughters, and how much of that connection to the land has changed over time.

I’ve always loved history, and it’s even better being able to share that passion with my kids while exploring places I’ve wanted to visit for years.

I’ve spent the last few weeks deep in the newspaper archives researching singer-songwriter Boo Hewerdine for my new documentary My Name in [Brackets].

Over a 40-year career in music, there are a lot of stories to uncover…more than 3,000 archive hits so far. 🤯

Most people know Boo through Patience of Angels, Graceland and his work with Eddi Reader and The Bible, but digging through old interviews, reviews and local papers has revealed so much more about the man behind the music.

At one point I got completely distracted and started searching for myself instead… only to discover some very questionable old newspaper photos from when The King’s Trust (then The Prince’s Trust) helped me become a freelancer at 21. 😂

Not sure what’s more fascinating, Boo’s archive or my hair choices.

If you’d like to follow the journey of making this documentary, give me a like and a follow @yorkshireedit

Three days working behind the scenes at UKREiiF with a brilliant crew… @davehackney, @thedigitalcortex, @constructfilms.co.uk, and the wider team.

My role across the conference has been wrangling and managing media coming in from multiple cameras, including Blackmagics, Sonys, and DJI drones, while also turning around edits at speed for the main media team. Lots of backing up cards, organising footage, exporting key clips, and cutting highlight reels while the event is still happening.

A lot of the footage needs quick turnaround edits for speeches, fireside chats, panel discussions, and keynote moments featuring MPs, celebrities and industry leaders, so it’s been a real mix of technical organisation and creative editing under pressure.

With more than 16,000 delegates across the three days, there’s been a huge amount happening all at once, so keeping everything flowing smoothly behind the scenes has definitely been part of the challenge.

Exhausting but really interesting work, and always nice being part of a solid team on a large-scale production.

What would your dream creative workspace look like? A big studio, a cosy garden office, a coffee shop corner… or something completely different?

Busy week ahead, so I probably won’t be posting loads over the next few days. Here’s a little glimpse of my rainy garden edit suite ☔️🎬

This week I’m mainly wearing my video editor hat, cutting away in the studio between a few location shoots and filming days out and about.

I’ve been a freelance editor for over 20 years, and this is still my happy place.

If you need any post-production support, feel free to DM me. I work across socials, shorts, documentaries, broadcast TV and feature films.

And if you fancy a coffee, you’re very welcome to come and have a nosy around the edit suite and talk all things film, documentary and post-production ☕️

Recently, me and my co-producer Jo Rogers pitched our documentary My Name in [Brackets] as part of the @audible_uk x @asffestival Listening Pitch.

We made it all the way to the final live pitching stage and although we didn’t get the funding, the experience taught us a huge amount.

I’d love to know what you think about the questions we were asked in the pitch.

Do you think “What’s the narrative?” is a fair question for an observational documentary?

And would the phrase “cinéma vérité” have thrown you in the moment?

PART 9 - My Name In [Brackets] Behind The Scenes

We’re in Pickering with @boohewerdine and @yvonnelyonmusic on their @thingsfoundinbooksuk tour.

I went with the aim of filming a small gig to show the other side of Boo’s world (when he’s not performing to 2000 people supporting Eddi Reader). It was lovely to catch up with Yvonne too. Boo and Yvonne composed the score for my last film ‘Joy O’ Dance’. So nice to have a catch up!

Something I hadn’t planned for on this shoot was being invited to Martin and Penny’s house for food. Their kindness and hospitality became one of the most memorable parts of the day and really showed me the sense of community that surrounds live music, which is something I’m trying to capture in this film.

Thanks also to the @pickeringbooktree for letting me film in such a wonderful space.

Do you have a memorable gig moment or a music community story that has stayed with you over the years? Leave a comment below and follow me or Boo to stay updated about our film.

PART 7 - My Name In [Brackets] Behind the scenes.

It doesn’t always go to plan!  Even when you’ve scheduled the shoot, made a comprehensive call sheet full of all the logistical information we need… things still go wrong.

While we were in Glasgow filming our documentary about @boohewerdine we got stuck in an NCP carpark, my SatNav broke… but it probably wouldn’t have helped because the roads around Glasgow centre were full of roadworks, diversions and closures.  It delayed our start by about an hour.

Thankfully, we did find Boo in the end, and he had some coffees for me and producer @rogersmc WE NEEDED THE COFFEE!

Keep following my posts as I share my documentary journey.

The best thing about working in documentary is how much I learn about the subjects I’m covering. Today was a total masterclass in ancient traditions!

I’ve had so much fun with @tarnandmoon learning all about the Beltane festival. It’s going to be a super little segment for our documentary, ‘Witching Realms’. 🧹🌼🔥

We’re filming over the course of a year to watch the seasons change, and it’s been incredible to witness the transition into the summer months. I’m already looking forward to our next shoot in the height of the sun! ☀️

Over then next few weeks I’ll be posting behind the scenes reels from a shoot that took place in Glasgow.  The purpose was to film a sizzle so we can pitch our film to channels.  I’ll show you the highs and lows of self shooting, funding, and trying to get a documentary made in what feels like an impossible market.

This is part 1

A little camera test.  I want to place the Osmo on a train window to get a blurred effect.  For this test I used an ND filter and the timelapse setting using an interval of 2 seconds.  It’s a little annoying that there isn’t a headlock as the head follows the movement of the car.  It’s still an interesting effect though.

Come take a look at my kit with me 🎒🎥

I’m heading up to Glasgow this weekend to start shooting a documentary, so today is all about prep. I’m going through my bag, checking every piece of gear, testing it, cleaning it, and making sure everything is ready to go.

No room for last-minute surprises on a shoot like this.

In this reel, I’m focusing on one of the most important parts of my setup is the lenses. These are the tools that really shape the story, so I like to make sure they’re in top condition before heading out.

I’ve got a mix of L series Canons, Lensbaby’s and a very unique art lens called an Achromat.

If you’ve got any questions about what I’m using or anything I mention in the video, drop me a DM or leave a comment below 👇

Here’s a little recap of our Joy O’ Dance journey so far…

It’s been a bit of a whirlwind, and we’re so grateful for all the support the film has been getting.

We’ve now won Best Documentary at the Chicago Feedback Film Festival, whoop! @wildsoundfestival

There are still quite a few festivals we’re waiting to hear back from, so the journey is far from over.

More to come.

Three months, three cohorts, done.

Wrapped a course with @Screen_Yorkshire where I was post production course leader, writing, delivering and assessing an Ofsted recognised programme, and directing the final projects.

Started with the basics. Ingest, QC, syncing, multicam, green screen, Unreal Engine and virtual production, plus scripted vs unscripted workflows. Built up properly from there.

Had some great trips out. Time with @truenorthtv getting hands on with Avid and unscripted workflows, and a visit to @dock10 looking at virtual production and how things like Match of the Day come together. Thanks to the team for that.

Based at @SticksAndGlass in Leeds which gave everyone a proper working environment.

Finished by bringing all cohorts together to shoot two shorts on the VP stage at @tungsten.media. Everyone working under HODs, proper industry setup. I directed both scripts by @FionaGeorgiouHunt.

If you are looking for trainees, runners or new entrants, get in touch. Some very good people coming through, all aiming for paid placements next.

Drop me a message.
